The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XV, Copyright 1912 by Robert Appleton Company, stated:
<As of 1890, the Federal Census Bureau listed Catholics as 55 percent of New York's total Church members. As of 1905, New York's population was 8,067,308, of which 43.7 percent were regular Church members. In 1906, the Federal Census Bureau listed the number of Churches and halls for worship in New York at 9,193, with a seating capacity of 3,191,267. Catholics were 63.6 percent of New York's total Church members and Protestant Episcopalian were 2.4 percent.
In 1908, the Department of Education of New York listed the Catholic Church of New York as having 451 parochial schools with 210,000 students, plus numerous Catholic academies and colleges. In 1910, The Catholic Annual showed New York's Catholic population at 2,722,547 in 1,280 Churches with 2,350 priests, and 269,420 students in 469 parochial schools.> 1906NY002
