South Dakota (November 2, 1889)

South Dakota (November 2, 1889) was the 40th State admitted to the Union. The Constitution of the State of South Dakota, adopted 1889, stated:

<Preamble. We, the people of South Dakota, grateful to Almighty God for our civil and religious liberties...establish this Constitution...> 1889SD001

<Article VI, Section 3. The right to worship God according to the dictates of conscience shall never be infringed.> 1889SD002
